Summary

History, architecture and art of Saint Augustine’s chapel in Porijai Village, Daujėnai Parish

Regimanta Stankevičienė

The Porijai cemetery chapel is an example of the 19th c. (second half?) wooden sacral folk architecture affected by classicism traditions but attaining also some original features. Its unassuming equipment (altar, furniture, utensils and art pieces) also reveals historical, art and typology value of the chapel. The history of the Porijai cemetery and its chapel reflects traditions of devotion of local people, as well as the history of Lithuania and the Church in Lithuania: occupations, fights for freedom, administrative changes, personal and community initiatives etc.
