Summary

The human life reflections in the Samogitian Endriejavas sub-dialect

Algirdas Ruðkys

The lexis and phraseology of the Samogitian sub-dialect observed in the area of Endriejavas region is analysed in the article. Six lexico-semantic groups have been distinguished according to the way the lexis is used to express certain characteristics of a person: (1) the external look; (2) positive character features; (3) negative character features; (4) the age; (5) the health; and (6) the social status.

The analysis of the above-mentioned lexico-semantic groups was carried out by applying the method of the semantic-functional typology. The semantic-stylistic investigations of the lexis typical of Samogitian Endriejavas sub-dialect were based on the original material collected in the sub-dialect area. The article deals with the inherited lexis mainly, and only some barbarisms or hybrid formations from the olden times are mentioned. The main goal was to investigate the so-called model of the reality reflection in the Samogitian speaker’s consciousness and to stress the unique character of this model. Thus, the cases of lexis and phraseology analysed represent the vocabulary typical of this region and reflecting the main tendencies of semantic and stylistic actualisation of the sub-dialect speech.

The investigation was based on a modern methodology of the conceptual metaphoric meaning. A special attention was paid to the synonymy and variability of the sub-dialect speech. The accentuation of the nominal forms of the vocabulary is presented in order to disclose some formal differences between the sub-dialect speech and the standard Lithuanian.

The conclusions and references to literature mentioned and lexicographic sources are given at the end of the article.
