Microtoponyms and the past

 Vytautas Sirtautas

The material collected during the 1970 expedition in the environs of Gruzdžiai is discussed in the paper. Part 1 deals with detailed description of microtoponyms (names of forests, fields, roads, rivers, brooks, bogs and villages) and their localisation.

An attempt to explain the etymology of over 40 toponyms is made in Part 2.

Part 3 presents some rare words and sentences of informers in order to facilitate the illustration of the items described.

Part 4 is to inform a reader with some historical phenomena (related to the names of working, medical and other tools), since they are rapidly changing.

The author hopes that this inventory will reveal at least a part of the past life features of the people in Gruzdžiai environs.
