Ieva Baužienė

The region of Užpaliai is traditionally famous of agriculture, although the soil quality is low. In order to reveal the reasons of such contradiction, a review of historical, social and natural factors has been performed. The quality of soil and its agrochemical characteristics were compared to those in the neighbouring areas. High level of agriculture in Užpaliai was found to be caused not by nature but by human factor. According to the quality determining indices, the soils in Užpaliai are in a medium position between those of nearby uplands and plateaus. Soil quality can be improved by sustainable agriculture with minimal cultivation of land, use of catch crops etc.
